BASIC COUNSELLING SKILLS FOR TEACHERS, PARENTS AND STUDENTSA Workshop by Dr Anula Samuel MSocSc (Counselling) – Australia; MA Educational Management – UK; PhD Education – USA For the ANPS Annual Teachers’ Conference on Saturday 16 February 2008 There is a close connection between counseling and teaching. Both professions require guidance of individuals to have basic counseling skills for effective communication and teacher-student relationship. There is a growing need for teachers and parents to explore basic counselor education. When teachers use motivational techniques in the classrooms, their students will be keen and motivated learners and not require counselling sessions for being reluctant and unmotivated learners impeded by personal concerns, social problems and emotional problems. Teachers and parents need to understand the nature and purpose of counselling, the stages of counselling relationships and basic skills in counselling, such as empathic listening and attending skills, counsellor self-awareness, and ethical and practical issues to be unprofessional counsellors. “Basic Counselling Skills for Teachers, Parents and Students” is a skills-based workshop where participants will take part in experiential learning through role play and hands-on activities. It is hoped that participants will take away with them relevant tools that may be used in and outside their classrooms.
Gaylord Anderson is presently the Head of School at Sekolah Lentera Internasional. He
has been involved in Professional Development for over 20 years and has
been a staff trainer, Principal or Head of School in several schools in
America, Africa, Saudi Arabia, and Indonesia. Professional Learning CommunitiesThe
research is clear that if schools are to move from ‘good’ to
‘excellent’ they must embrace Professional Learning Communities. This
workshop will focus on how to establish effective PLCs in your school.
Reasons why PLCs are so powerful in raising student achievement will be
explored, as well as ‘best strategies’ for enhancing student learning.
Community and Services as part of Curriculum Education
aims to develop students in academic, social and emotional aspects. One
of the options to develop the social and emotional growth of the
students is through Community and Services (CNS). CNS
gives many advantages to students, it enables them to know their
ability, develop initiative, empathy, responsibility, and independence.A
structured CNS within the school setting will benefits the students, it
develops an awareness of the learning that students have done during
the CNS activities. To start CNS at school, a CNS Team should consist
of the School Principals, teachers, Parents and Student. This should be
formed to direct the school vision and mission that enable CNS to
become the spirit of the school. In
the beginning the CNS implementation socialization within the school
community is very important. CNS activities can be integrated in class
subjects and as extracurricular activities. Collaboration with outside
parties should be made to broaden students’ opportunities to learn. To
make CNS part of the school’s spirit teachers should be the role model
of the program, supportive atmosphere should be created and recognition
should be made to increase the students’ participation in the program.

Helping Students to be Self Disciplined Richard F. Henry – Executive Principal: Sekolah Global Jaya Abstract One
of the greatest gifts we can give to our children is to provide a safe
and supportive environment for them to learn to be self disciplined.
With self discipline comes effective communication, effective
collaboration and effective contributions to society. This session will
look at defining self discipline and why it is important for teachers
to guide their students on a pathway which will develop discipline in
their lives. Participants will discuss what it means to be self
disciplined and why the teacher plays such an important role in
developing this aspect of a student’s life. The session will also
provide some practical examples in a school setting which can be
utilized by teachers.
