A national plus school can be:

  • Any school that labels itself as national plus;
  • A member of the Association of National Plus Schools (ANPS), which is open to any school upon payment of membership fee; or
  • An accredited member of the ANPS, certified to meet certain standards.

 

The public should be aware that not every school that calls itself national plus is a member of ANPS, and that not every member of ANPS is accredited by ANPS.

 

Characteristics and Indicators of National Plus Schools

 

CHARACTERISTIC 1: SCHOOL POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

“A set of clear policies has been developed, documented, published, and implemented by the school”

 

INDICATORS

Policy documents include:

  • The school's philosophy/vision/mission statement and strategic plan. (Mandatory) (e.g. School/parent/student/teacher handbooks) 
  • The school's management structure. (Mandatory) (e.g. Diagrammatic representation of school's hierarchy)
  • School-based policies, processes and procedures. (Mandatory) (e.g. School/parent/student/teacher handbooks)

 

CHARACTERISTIC 2: INDONESIAN CULTURE AND ENVIRONMENT

“There is knowledge of and respect for Indonesian cultural values, diversity, and the natural environment”

 

INDICATORS

The school provides clear evidence of respect, preservation and promotion of Indonesian culture and environments including

Indonesian visual and performing arts.

Indonesian religious and ethnic diversity. (Mandatory) (e.g. Enrolment statement, timetable, curriculum overview)

Indonesian language. (Mandatory) (e.g. Timetable, curriculum overview)

The school provides clear evidence of awareness of and respect for the natural environment. (Developing)

 

CHARACTERISTIC 3: LANGUAGES USED

  “Students are educated in, and can communicate using both Indonesian and English”

INDICATORS

  • English is used as the predominant language for student learning in at least the core subjects of English, Mathematics, and Science.

  • Students are able to communicate formally and informally in both Indonesian and English. (Developing)
  • Bilingual resources are integrated in the curriculum and utilised by teachers and students. (Developing)
  • Opportunities outside the classroom are provided for students to use and extend their bilingual knowledge and skills. (Developing)
  • The Library provides bilingual curriculum-based and recreational resources. (Developing)

 

CHARACTERISTIC 4: PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

“There is a commitment to plan and implement ongoing staff professional development”

INDICATORS

  • Commitment for teachers to participate in shared professional development activities where teachers from various schools can exchange and develop educational practices. (Mandatory) (e.g. Participation in “Job Alike” sessions, evidence of staff professional development, staff statements)
  • Teachers participate each year in a workshop or seminar related to international educational standards and developments.

  • Structures exist within the school for ongoing internal staff training and development.

  • Regular appraisal of staff performance by the designated line manager.

  • Assessment and reporting provides individual student accreditation that is recognized by national and international education institutions. (Developing)

 

CHARACTERISTIC 6: TEACHING AND LEARNING PROGRAM

“Educational programs, teaching methodologies and a range of assessment practices support student-centered learning”

INDICATORS

  • A school-based curriculum has been developed, documented, and implemented for all grades and/or subjects that specifies
  • What is to be learned.
  • What the learner outcomes are to be.
  • What activities are to be used to achieve the desired outcomes.
  • How the students will know what they have learned.
  • How the teachers will know what the students have learned. (Developing)
  • Teachers use a variety of teaching methodologies. (Developing)
  • Teachers use a variety of assessment strategies. (Developing)
  • Cumulative assessment occurs and an ongoing record is kept indicating individual student development. (Developing)
  • Parents participate in their child's educational development, including conferencing and reporting. (Developing)
  • Opportunities are provided to enable parents to contribute towards the educational development of the school. (Developing)

 

CHARACTERISTIC 7: RESOURCES AND FACILITIES

“An appropriate range of resources and facilities are provided to achieve described learning outcomes”

  • An optimal student-teacher ratio is set to achieve the school's described learning outcomes. (Mandatory) (e.g. Total teachers / students per division, promotional materials, policy documents)
  • Buildings and individual classrooms promote a positive learning environment. (Developing)
  • Facilities including library, science laboratories, computer laboratories, visual and performing arts centre, and sporting facilities are designed and equipped to support teaching and learning programs. (Developing)
  • Issues of safety standards are addressed. (Mandatory) (e.g. Staff duty rosters, evacuation policy documents, fire drills)
